Our History

The Ulverstone District Cricket Club as we know it today was formed at the commencement of the North West Tasmania Cricket Association (NWTCA) competition in October 1951. However from the late 1870's cricket teams from Ulverstone and the surrounding districts played in a very strong local competition. Representative teams from the Ulverstone area played against other coastal towns in a knockout competition for the Tattersall Shield, which Ulverstone won on several occasions including the 1950-51 season, the last year before the start of the N.W.T.C.A. competition.

During this early period there is a long history of great cricket teams and players representing the Ulverstone district. The late Alf Pickett and Roy Pearson were two players who were very highly regarded from those early days. Mr Alf Pickett represented Tasmania and went on to play for the Melbourne Cricket Club, but a promising career was cut short by injuries. Mr Roy Pearson who came from Upper Castra in the Ulverstone Municipality, represented the district on many occasions, and it was rumoured that during the late twenties he was under consideration for test selection.

At the initiative of Cricket Tasmania, in 2007/08 the N.W.T.C.A. underwent a name change and is now known as Cricket North West, to come into line with Cricket Tasmania's operational structure.

Ulverstone CC stalwart and state player Mr Eric Morse played a large part in the formation of the North West Tasmania Cricket Association (NWTCA) in 1951, with Ulverstone being an inaugural member and Eric Morse their first captain in the new competition. The club was located at the Ulverstone Recreation ground in Water Street until 1970, when it relocated to the Agricultural Show ground in West Ulverstone for a short time and in 1984 the club moved to it's present location at the newly developed River Road complex. Since joining the NWTCA Ulverstone has won the First Grade championship on six occasions and has produced many fine First Grade players and several state representatives.
